“THE” Car

With the decision made to head off around Australia, we are now faced with the dilemma of selling the vehicle we own and buying one that will tow a caravan.

Our current car is not capable of hauling a mini house, however, as it is only two years old, we do feel we will get a good price for it. It’s a (go fast) red Holden Thunder Ute, complete with auto locking lid, boot liner and a few other bells and whistles. The best thing though is the low mileage – only 30,000 kilometres (funny that we still refer to the odometer reading as mileage).

We are confident we will be able to sell it privately and put those funds towards THE Car, but I’m starting to do my head in with the plethora of decisions to make choosing the right vehicle. Towing capacity, fuel consumption, new verses used, Pajero verses Grand Cherokee verses Prado verses (I guess) everything else.

We owned a Pajero not that long ago and I can’t believe we are now considering buying another one. All things said and done though, if we still owned our Pajero today, we would still be faced with replacing it. It was a 2007 petrol model and my research so far has revealed that we must buy a diesel model, not only for better fuel consumption, but also because diesels have better wear and tear which is key when planning on towing a caravan – especially a caravan akin to a mini house.

We did go ‘window shopping’ yesterday and completely avoided the ‘but wait there’s more!’ sales pitch, although I must admit I only walked away with more questions than I started with.

I guess I have a lot more research to do.

I'd love to hear your thoughts ...
