Chicken Parmigiana at the Iluka Tavern

Chicken Parmigiana

Crumbed chicken breast with Nepolitana sauce, bacon and cheese, and your choice of chips and salad or seasonal vegetables.

Iluka Tavern, Coles Bay

Dean and I enjoyed our dinner at the little tavern next to the caravan park where we are staying in Coles Bay.  I couldn’t go past the Chicken Parmigiana (of cause) and Dean had Beer-battered Flathead with chips and salad.  Dean really enjoyed his meal, saying it was the nicest fish he’s had in a very long time, better than the fish we had at The Sea Life Centre in Bicheno as mentioned in my last parmigiana review.

Chicken
The schnitzel was chicken breast, moist and tender and the size of the serving was very generous.  I gave a little less than half to Dean as I simply could not eat so much.

The crumb was crisp on the edges, but I discovered the underside was undercooked.  All things aside though, it tasted amazing.  (Perhaps I was hungry.)

Sauce
The sauce was basic, I have had nicer, and before I had eaten much, the chicken crumb had gone quite soggy under all the sauce and fallen away from the meat.  The inclusion of bacon was the saving of the sauce, giving it a nice little punch.

There was a good amount of cheese, if perhaps a little too much for my liking, but it was melted and not falling off the schnitzel.

Extras
The salad was amazing.  So much so, I took an additional photo of it.The Salad

Just a simple salad (I guess) consisting of rocket, red cabbage, red onion, red capsicum and cucumber, but vegetables we have been without for quite some time due to the limited supply on offer in St Helens.  Simple the vegetables may have been, but they combined perfectly together and were fresh.  They were absolutely delicious and I ate all of the salad.

The chips were fresh and crisp and I don’t have much else to say about them other than those below the chicken did go soggy.  I tried to take the chicken off the chips, but the plate wasn’t big enough.

Rating: 1 – 2 – 3 – 45 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9 – 10+ (Because of the salad)

Rating Overall

I gave this Chicken Parmigiana 8/10 overall only because the salad was the hero on the plate and although there wasn’t really that much wrong with the meal, it wasn’t as good at those I have rated higher.

Don’t forget to check out where this Chicken Parmigiana sits on My Parmigiana Richter Scale.

  1. Have bad memories of Coles Bay, even though it is a glorious place. Got my first and only case of hyperthermia there, it’s a long story.

    1. Hey Bruce,

There isn’t much left on the menu when you don’t eat seafood and can cook a mean steak at home. At least I’ll know where to find the best parmigiana in Australia by the time our trip is over.
