Just A Little Chilly

We arrived in Hobart, the state’s capital on Tuesday morning, barely ahead of a cold front moving across Tasmania from west to east. Tuesday night the van rocked and rolled all over the place with the winds, some recorded at 150 kilometres (93.5 miles) per hour.  Most unusual and at times a little scary.

It was a rather cold this morning when we woke up and the situations looks a little grim for where we travel now. We are neither wanting to, nor prepared for, travelling on snow-covered roads.  Nor, for that matter, do we have clothes warm enough for frolicking around in the snow.

It is expected another cold front will move in across the weekend further jeopardising our efforts to travel a little further south before turning around and heading north again.  We are now considering that Hobart is as far south as we go.

Mount Wellington

Kunanyi / Mount Wellington at 12.59 pm, May 7 2015

This photograph was taken from Lauderdale on the other side of the Derwent River. Mount Wellington looks every bit as chilly as it is. -2.9° C (26.8° F), but the observations report that it feels more like -13.7° C (7.3° F). Too chilly for me and I’m certain more than half that snow was not there yesterday.

Most of the national parks I was keen to visit have recorded snowfall with the forecasts for more snow next week.

Perhaps we’ll have to wait to see them another time.

  1. The snow on Mt Wellington made the news last night – as part of a bigger story about early snowfall due to cold/wet weather.
Careful when you open the car door. You (and the door) may be blown away! But gosh it looks fun! 😊

    1. If only Nancy,

We have been unable to have a camp fire due to the rain and bushfire restrictions in some of the places we’ve been, but I’m hoping when we move on tomorrow, we’ll find ourselves in a spot where we can roast some marshmallows.
