New Norfolk

Thoughts on Location No 28

New Norfolk, Derwent Valley, Tasmania

After leaving Hobart behind, it was only a short trip up the valley to New Norfolk.

The recent snowfall had us uneasy about towing our mini home up to the camping ground at Mt Field National Park, therefore New Norfolk seemed the next best, most sensible idea, and this proved to be a very good decision indeed as the Mt Field camping ground was closed due to a burst water pipe.

We had a lovely day at Mt Field on Monday (see Waterfalls, Tall Trees and The Fagus), but unfortunately Tuesday was absolutely miserable.  It rained all day and there was nothing for us to do but sit inside our mini home.  I caught up on writing thoughts for my blog, and Dean read his book.

It felt like a waste of a day (again) after so many wet miserable days in Hobart, but we don’t have any control over the weather and the rain is associated with the cold front that’s been dumping the snow higher up.

We stayed at the New Norfolk Caravan Park, set on the banks of the Derwent River.  There isn’t much to say about the park, it was (for us) a means unto an end, and I’m sure it would have been very nice minus all the rain.  We found ourselves on a site that was devoid of grass and hence we spent two days slopping around in the mud.

The park owner was very nice and helpful regarding the area and what to do and where to go, but unfortunately we failed to see anything, though we took a walk along the esplanade before we left on Wednesday morning (where I took the featured photo above).

It was easy to imagine how pretty the view would have been just a few weeks earlier before the tree dropped all their leaves.

  1. I’m glad you at least caught up on posts so we can see what you’ve been up to! The Fagus and the drive up to Lake Dobson was awesome! (Yes, even via a screen held in my hand.)
