The Humble Chicken Parmigiana

Some Final Words for Now

After eating Chicken Parmigiana in every state of Australia, I’ve been amazed at the variety of parmigianas out there and very surprised at the quality of some.  Oft times I’ve judged a book by its cover and assumed the pub or club we were in couldn’t possibly serve yummy, outstanding food.

19 months ago I said Chicken Parmigiana is “pretty hard to get wrong”.

But I’ve also been shocked at how easily, and often, pubs and clubs do get it wrong when it comes to the humble Chicken Parmigiana.

It is after all only a chicken schnitzel served with a sauce of some kind and topped with cheese that’s meant to be melted over the sauce.  And yet, with the addition of a little love it can be so much more than that.

I now know that a fancy establishment doesn’t always mean the food will match your surroundings.  I guess I was naive.  Reviews by others (either online or in person) aren’t always accurate either and there were a few times when we were sorry we listened.

The most surprising thing of all, the huge variety in price.  We’ve both enjoyed sumptuous parmigianas for $15 on two occasions at the Bayside Inn while staying at St Helens in Tasmania, and I rather enjoyed the $10 parmigiana I had at the Hotel Bondi in Sydney when we were there for a weekend.

But at the other end of the scale, and most surprising of all, the dearest parmigiana was my first at the Dicky Beach Surf Club.  As a non-member of the club, the Dicky Beach Parmigiana cost $27.95, and that was sad to say, although the price hasn’t changed in 19 months.

Having (now) joined the club as a social member, our meals were cheaper and my parmigiana on Sunday night was more reasonably priced at $24.90.

I’ve had so much fun reviewing Chicken Parmigianas as we’ve travelled around Australia and even though we are ‘home’, I look forward to enjoying more and sharing my opinion of how they compare to those I’ve already reviewed.

  1. Thank you Clare for these thoughts. My mouth is again salivating at the mere thought of a sumptuous parma meal. Yum! Hope you are enjoying the sunshine at Dickies.
