A Little Something Blue

Even though his feathers are azure in colour, this is not the Azure Kingfisher.

Look at those brilliant blue feathers

No – This is the Little Kingfisher.

I was rather disappointed to discover this brilliantly coloured bird was not the Azure Kingfisher, and despite its name, it’s not the smallest kingfisher.  I thought it was roughly half the size of a Laughing Kookaburra who, as it turns out, is not the biggest kingfisher either.

We saw lots of Little Kingfishers during our time in Mooloolah Valley, though I must admit, like most birds, they were not easy to photograph and most of the snaps I took are very blurry.

Unlike the distinctive laugh of it’s bigger relative, the only clue I had that a Little Kingfisher was nearby, was a dazzling flash of blue as they flitted in and out of the nearby trees in search of morsels, but I’m happy that at least I managed one or two photos that are (almost) clear enough.

I’ll just have to keep looking for that elusive Azure Kingfisher.  Maybe I’ll see one sooner or later.

    1. They are beautiful and (according to Wikipedia), there are roughly 90 species of kingfishers with ” . . . a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found outside of the Americas.”
