Why I’m Typing Up My Recipes

A little over 36 years ago, I purchased a hard covered notebook.  A5 in size, it wasn’t anything special, or fancy, but it was somewhere I could write down recipes.

Some belonged to my mother, some belonged to her mother and other’s belonged to my father’s mother.  Some recipes were given to me by friends, other’s stolen from magazines in patient waiting rooms, the sound of paper tearing not quite discussed by coughing.

There are even recipes within its pages that are of my own creation, as some of you well know by now.

I know this is going to make me sound old, but, ‘in my generation’ we wrote our recipes down, creating a keepsake to refer to when the situation called for something special – family get-togethers, friends visiting, the dreaded ‘cake stall’ at school – there are a plethora of reasons and occasions to refer to ones’ personal recipe book.

Over the years, I’ve collected and written down many wonderful recipes that have stood the test of time.  Sadly though, the notebook has not.  The pages have torn loose from the cover and spills during my culinary creativity have eaten the words right off the paper.

What was once considered a ‘treasure’ I could pass down to my girls, has become a relic I’ve needed to handle with kid gloves.

I’ve never counted the recipes within my notebook, but my best guess is more than 150, and even though I’ve already attended to writing up a little over 20, this total includes new recipes that never made it to my notebook.  I know I have a task and a half ahead of me – especially if I want to continue including photos with the recipes.

Now there’s a thought that perhaps I should not entertain.  If I cook a recipe simply to photograph it, then it will need to be eaten and I’m aware there are a lot of cakes and biscuit recipes in my book.

I think I’m going to need a plan here because I don’t need to ‘bake ‘n eat’ them all.

  1. Did the same things with an exercise book. Any I saw and liked in magazines etc or were handed to me I would stick them in the book which was sectionized into starters, soups, mains and so on. Great minds..

  2. I think that’s a place we all get to sooner or later. (Unless we eat out all the time!!!) Get it typed up and there are lots of places that will turn it into a spiral-bound cookbook for you and your family. You can even have them add blank pages for their own additions later.
