Frangipani Heaven

Hidden away on the Sunshine Coast, between Nambour and Maroochydore, is a little gem of a farm.  With paddocks and paddocks full of frangipani trees of all shapes and sizes, both common and exotic, not to mention all the colours and wonderful perfumes, it is an absolute delight to behold.

And for a couple of hours on Saturday, I was in Frangipani Heaven.

When my friend Lisa asked if I’d like to go with her to the Sunshine Coast Frangipani Farm open day, naturally I said ‘Yes!’ and, naturally, I took my camera along.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we arrived a little late and had to quickly navigate our way through the rows and rows of trees to where the group had gathered, they were inspecting the flower of one particular variety.  I’m not sure what we missed, but we certainly didn’t miss admiring the flowers.

This is the time of year when frangipanis flower in Australia.  What better time to have an open day?  Lots of blooms had reached their peak and, in some areas, carpeted the ground where they’d fallen.

Other trees were in their glory, absolutely laden with masses of flowers.

I soon discovered our ‘guide’ was describing the history of each specific variety and taking cuttings for those who wished to make a purchase.  Some were being offered at reduced prices I must add, just for the open day,

How could one decide with all of these gorgeous flowers on offer?

And I wish I could tell you the names of the varieties I photographed, but sadly, I can’t.

I enjoyed seeing the flowers in all stages of opening, from bud to full bloom.

I love frangipanis (most flowers for that matter) and I have to admit, I did not arrive without a plan.  It could be so tempting to say “I’ll have one of those, and one of those, and one of those”, and so on.  But I had a budget, and I managed to keep my ‘spending’ to a minimum, returning home with only three cuttings – and change.

I now have Watermelon, Bowen Yellow, and Fruit Salad to add to my slowly increasing collection.

Also known as Butter Yellow, I’ve decided to affectionately call the Bowen Yellow variety ‘Bowen Mango’ in honour of those delicious Australian mangoes.

Consequently, I now have a ‘bowl of fruit’ and can’t wait for them to flower again this time next year.
